Malaysian Yacht Racing

 

Sailing is the art of controlling a sailing vessel. By adjusting the rigging, rudder and dagger or centre board, a sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails (main and/or jib) in order to change the direction and speed of a boat. Mastery of the skill requires experience in varying wind and sea conditions, as well as knowledge concerning sailboats.Wiki Reference.

Malaysian sailing and yachting activities have placed its properly interest to the Malaysians. Generally, activated through yacht clubs all around Malaysia the competitions set are also offer prestigious awards for all class racers

Malaysian All Year Round Competitions (2008)


·        Royal Langkawi International Regatta - It is a 5 Day Racing events. All along the Langkawi shore. The Regatta is organized by the Royal Langkawi International Regatta Organizing Committee under the patronage of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, under the auspices of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club in conjunction with the Malaysian Yachting Association and with cooperation of provincial authority of Langkawi, and Kedah State of Authority, Malaysia.

·        Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta - Established in 1990, it is Malaysia's oldest keelboat sailing regatta and one of the region's premier events, ranking alongside Thailand's Phuket King's Cup and Hong Kong's China Coast Regatta and China Sea Race. The Raja Muda is also one of the very few true offshore passage racing regattas in the region, the others being Australia's Sydney to Hobart and various coastal races, and Hong Kong's China Sea/San Fernando and Vietnam/ Hainan races. The Regatta takes place each November over the course of 9 days, and is timed to finish a week prior to the Phuket King's Cup, as many yachts compete in both events.

·        Monsoon Cup - Monsoon Cup was first initiated by the Malaysian Prime Minister, Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi during his fishing trip in Terengganu with the state Chief Minister Dato Seri Idris Jusoh and state EXCO Dato' Wan Hisham. The Prime Minister thought the monsoon season should be used as an advantage to the state and her people rather than being seen as a hurdle.(Monsoon season last a few months a year in Terengganu mainly between November and January where the fisherman cant go out fishing due to strong waves.)

·        Regatta Lepa, Semporna - Semporna celebrates the annual Water Festival of Regatta Lepa in April. LEPA boat has been a significant part of the Sabah Bajau fishermen since immemorial time. The Regatta Lepa is an occasion to show-off all the beautifully built Lepas. The annual event's highlight is a competition to choose the most dazzling lepa. Colorful adorned lepas grace the waterfront, decked with the smiling faces of dancers and musicians. 3 Days of exciting activities and cultural shows dazed the visitors.

Horsburgh Challenge, Singapore - Held over two weekends the Horsburgh Challenge is the SAF Yacht Club’s signature keelboat event that is held at the height of the blustery north-east monsoon season.


QBE Insurance Phang Nga Bay Regatta - This regatta appeals to the serious, the not-so-serious and the not-at-all-serious 'racing' sailors has been expanded to 4 days for crews who like to combine spectacular scenery with lively parties over the Chinese New Year holiday period. Organised by the Ao Chalong Yacht Club in conjunction with QBE Insurance and ArtAsia Press This event has become so popular that an entry limit may need to be imposed.


March 21st - 24th China Sea Race starts 2008 Biennial San Fernando Race start - Organised by the Royal Hong Kong and Manila Yacht Club, the China Sea Race is a biennial, Offshore Category 1 race of 565nm from Hong Kong to Subic Bay in the Philippines. Considered one of Asia's blue-water classics. The race is open to offshore racing and cruising yachts with valid IRC Certificates.


March 25th to 29th 16th President's Cup Regatta - Organised by the Manila Yacht Club this annual regatta has an interesting International racing format and social program which is scheduled to take place bi-annually in Subic Bay and at majestic Boracay after the success in 2007.


May 1st to 5th: 4th Top of The Gulf Regatta & Coronation Cup - For keelboats, large multi's, beach cats and dinghy classes held on the first week of May at Ocean Marina, near Pattaya in the Gulf of Thailand. It incorporates the prestigious Platu 25 Coronation Cup and timed to commemorate the Coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej of Thailand.


June 1st to 7th: 7th Koh Samui Regatta - Last but not least each year, the mixture of passage and buoy racing in the Gulf of Thailand with a variety of good parties held at some of the classiest Island resorts on the east coast of the peninsula. The wonderful relaxed location of Koh Samui mixed in with pleasant Thai hospitality and top racing makes this venue one of the best in Asia.


July 23rd to 27th: Phuket Race Week - Image Asia Events successfully introduced this racing event to kick start the annual Asian Regatta Season and are the first private company to conduct regatta's in Asia. Hosted again by the Evason Phuket Resort and Spa and held off Phuket's breezy east coast during the 'Green Season' this event sails straight into the SW monsoon month of July and is topped off with five nights of fun parties that the competitors always look forward to.


July 26th start: Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race & Rally - By end of January twenty four expressions of interest have already been received for this years Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race & Rally. The popular race starts at 1100 hours on the 26th July. Entries close in June. The 600 mile race to the capital of the famous spice islands is destined again to be one of the World's classic blue water events.


26th July Start: Sail Indonesia - Darwin-Kupang-Bali-Singapore-Langkawi Yacht Rally 2006 The 2008 edition is a collaborative effort to promote the navigational route from Darwin, Australia, through the Indonesian archipelago, up the Malacca Straits before ending in Langkawi, Malaysia.


JULY 26th, 27th & AUG 2nd: RSYC Regatta - The RSYC Regatta is fast becoming Singapore's largest and premier keelboat event. A record number of yachts took part last year and attracted the cream of Singapore’s keelboat racing community with an exciting line-up of sport boats, racing and cruising yachts. This is one regatta which attracts all comers, ranging from solo sailors to the serious racers and leisure cruisers.


August 10th, 17th & 23rd to 11th Western Circuit Sailing Regatta - The WCSR is recognized as one of Singapore's premier regattas that takes place in Western Singapore waters. The 2008 edition features four divisions: IRC A & B, PY, One Design (J-24) and F16 catamarans. A new SMU Cup will be awarded to the winner of Day 2 passage race. The Western Circuit has gained the enviable reputation as being one of the most popular regattas, were both Singaporean and regionally based keel boats can join together in a competitive and friendly atmosphere. All participating yachts will get free berthing at Raffles Marina.


Aug 17th to 26th: The SANDEQ RACE - Is the world's fastest, longest and hardest race for traditional fishing vessels and one of Indonesia's best nautical events of the year! The annual race for traditional sandeq outrigger sailing boats starts in Mamuju and ends in Makassar.


September 7th to 12th: 5th Borneo International Yachting Challenge - After a hiatus of a year, this event jointly organized by the State of Sarawak on Borneo and the Federal Territory Island of Labuan is another joining the growing number of Asian events to promote regional marine and sporting tourism. The program starts in Labuan and includes a offshore race from Labuan to Miri plus a number of day races in Miri. The developer of the Miri Marina are offering free berthing for the duration of the event.


12th to 14th October: China Coast Regatta - China Coast Race Week is organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and comprises China Coast Regatta and an Offshore Category 1 race to Hainan, China or Nha Trang, Vietnam on alternate years. The Regatta consists of 3 days of racing in consistent 15 to 20 knot breezes on windward / leeward and Island courses in around Hong Kong.


October: China Cup International Regatta - After the success of inaugural China Cup International Regatta last year it will be once again be held in Daya Bay off Shenzhen.The Longcheer Yacht Club are the hosting venue and an extravaganza of social and cultural events are held during the event. The regatta kicks off with a passage race from Hong Kong to Shenzhen and followed by two days of inshore racing in and around the territorial waters in Shenzhen Daya Bay.


2008 Oct, Biennial HK to Vietnam Race. - 2008 sees the return of the biennial HK to Vietnam Race. The yachts usually experience lengthy downwind reaching conditions and as they sail deeper into the South China Sea can expect rolling seas to propel them on their way.




Nov 1st Singapore restart : SailAsia Rally - The rally started in Darwin during July as Sail Indonesia with over 90 entrants. SailAsia will be taking over from Raffles Marina, Singapore on the 3rd November ending in Langkawi for an exciting week from 24 to 29 Nov


November 14th to 22nd to 19th Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta - This annual island hoping regatta for racing class, cruisers, multihulls and classics is held along the west coast of peninsula Malaya starting from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club in Port Klang and finishing up in the legendary and Duty-Free Islands of Langkawi.


Nov 29th to Dec 6th - 22nd Phuket Kings Cup Regatta - Since its inception in 1987, the Phuket King's Cup Regatta has grown to become Asia's premier yachting event. Traditionally held in early December, the Regatta was first conceived to honour His Majesty the King of Thailand's 60th birthday. Now 22 years on the event has grown from strength to strength, in both size and reputation, boasting the largest gathering of keel boats, multi-hulls and traditional sailing craft annually in SE Asia.


December 3rd to 7th : 5th Phuket International Boat Show - To be held at the Royal Phuket Marina with a full array of boats on display in the water and ample space for marine suppliers to exhibit their products in air conditioned comfort. So catch all the brokers, dealers and their fabulous yacht brands under the same roof. Meet up with representatives from Phuket's marinas to experience the boating lifestyle and a big variety of luxury waterside property developers that can cater to all your needs be it a holiday apartment, retirement villa or a home away from home.




Dec 9th to 14th : Monsoon Cup Terengganu, Malaysia. - After three successful events the World Match Racing Tour will have the final round of the 2008 Tour Season in Terengganu, Malaysia. With the help of Aussie champion Dato' Peter Gilmour the Monsoon Cup has a MR 1,000,000 (approx US$275,000) prize pool.
